hey dom,

my point exactly. i am totally on the same page with the plateau part. it's something that shouldn't be ignored. problems that have been buried under because of a fear of the worst (in this case obviously a reference to breaking up etc) will always surface no matter what. it's only a matter of time. to me, when it hits a plateau, alarm bells should start ringing. it does not mean that because you have spent this amount of time together as a couple, it will translate into a guaranteed life of happy ever after.

it's hard to believe in happy ever afters. i don't believe in fairy tales, and i don't believe in the whole 'he swept me off my feet' shebang. but that's obviously just me. at the end of the day, i think we will never know if we know he/she's the one. sometimes we just psyche ourselves into believing it is the perfect fit.

ah well that said, sometimes life can be quite surprising. hats off to couples who like you said 'knew' that they were meant for each other right from the start. ya, perhaps they were just the lucky few.

tried the link but it does not come out right... only managed to access the main site: http://xkcd.com so i'm not sure which featured comic you are referring to?

on a random note, have you ever seen the film 'definitely maybe'? if you have, then you will know the brief scene where April says something to Will outside a restaurant which makes perfect sense and basically summarises what we just discussed.

i know exactly what you mean - just a while ago i wrote something about relationships on my own blog, about how within the space of one week i had three friends announce they'd gotten flats. and that's not counting the friends who've already gotten hitched...

that was about a month and a half ago. unfortunately i just learnt today that one of those three couples has broken up, so... i dunno. sometimes people think of marriage as the next logical step to take when the relationship hits a plateau, but what if that was actually the signal to get the hell out while you still could?

what's even scarier is that one never really knows whether his/her partner is the ONE... i mean, you hear all those happy couples saying all the time "oh, we just KNEW" but do they, really? well even if they did, perhaps they're just the lucky few...

take a look at this comic, it illustrates exactly what i mean.
