poetry
October 30, 2007
i’d have to say that i really miss the creative writing (poetry) class i took last sem.
maybe it’s my love for the written word, but i thoroughly enjoyed the class. led by local poet robert yeo, it gave me a better insight to the world of poetry. prior to the class, i had tried my hand at poetry but stopped for quite a while because i felt it was going nowhere. but after this class, i realised that it has given me a more concrete direction. we learnt about the various forms and methods of poetry writing and i had fun attending my first poetry slam and visiting the Kranji war memorial.
there wasn’t any exams for this module (duh!) but we had a few assignments and the biggest one required us to submit 12 original poems. i had much fun writing them. and i was looking through my computer and chanced upon them. reading it makes me want to write more. poetry. it can be quite exhilarating, flirting with words, to try and make them fit or not. i’m so inspired. suddenly. i want to write a whole lot more poems and who knows, i might publish them someday. not that i haven’t already.
my mass comm. days had me submitting two poems for one our creative anthology entitled “For the Love of God” and both got published.
hmmm but i won’t count that. i want to be as good as cyril wong. yes i like his poetry. i interviewed him for one of our poetry assignments and might i add: this dude can really SING!
all right, i shall start of with one of the poems i submitted for my 12-poem assignment. it’s kinda reflective of me, and the owl that i am. k, i’ll let it speak for itself. enjoy!
Night time
by Cheryl Chia
What Night brings is more than utter black;
Stars are overrated,
The deafening silence is golden many say but I think it
is plain and simple
like the way I like my tea
Others toss and turn,
eyes flutter rapidly while their subconscious
brings them to a dimension like no other
it’s either a dream or a nightmare or
neither.
Insomniacs say it with their deadpan pools of vision;
Night tortures them, whips
them with alert lashes that prevent
slumber.
Workaholics get high on
Routine, they type
Furiously, and find 2am to be no different from
2pm.
And I?
I like the soothing embrace that
Night time brings –
The enveloping peace that comes with the
stirring of the slow circular motion of my
‘General Electric’ fan.

P.S. will try to post more original poems as i get inspired. haha or i might just post more from my 12-poem assignment. hmmm but do i even have an audience? shout out, if you want me to do more poetry. maybe you can provide the subject and i’ll take it from there?
